Avant Foundation is dedicated to advancing medicine by supporting medical research from Australia’s brightest medical professionals.

Established in 2012, the 2025 Member Grants program is now open. The program provides funding to Avant members with a special focus on early-career doctors, to drive groundbreaking research that improves patient care and medical practices across the country.

The Member Grants continue to be a beacon for researchers tackling a wide range of medical challenges. From oncology to obstetrics and cardiology to hepatology, the grants aim to empower researchers and position the Avant Foundation as a leading research partner for doctors across Australia.

The program is open to both individuals and medical practices covered by Avant’s indemnity policies.

2025 Member Grants available

In 2025, Avant Foundation will be awarding up to $550,000 in our Member Grants program. The grants will include:

$50,000 and $25,000 grants for research
$5,000 microgrants to support education, career development or early-stage research.

The Miss Lewis Award

The prestigious Miss Lewis Award, valued at $5,000, will once again be granted to the most outstanding applicant among the member grant recipients. Named after Miss Elizabeth Lewis, a trailblazer in paediatric and spinal neurosurgery, this award celebrates exceptional innovation and dedication to advancing medicine.

In 2024, the Miss Lewis Award was presented to Dr Chloe Yap, whose pioneering research in psychiatric care to reduce the side effects of antipsychotic medications, earned her the honour. Dr Yap’s work continues to inspire, and we look forward to this year’s nominations.

Notable research funded in 2024

This included: a new approach to keloid treatment using pre-operative radiotherapy to reduce recurrence, pioneering research into dementia with Lewy bodies using novel liquid biopsy techniques, research on chronic rhinosinusitis, heart disease in scleroderma patients, hip replacements in older adults, and mental health issues in epilepsy care.
