Steve Robson

Avant Mutual, Australia’s largest medical indemnity insurer supporting over 90,000 doctors, today announced the appointment of Professor Steve Robson as Chief Medical Officer, effective 20 January 2025.

Group CEO and Managing Director, Natasha Fenech said Professor Robson would bring an impressive breadth of experience as a medical practitioner, economist and advocate as a member of Avant’s executive team. His appointment followed an extensive search.

“I am delighted to have Professor Robson join the Avant team in 2025. The Chief Medical Officer is a critical role at Avant, serving as the voice for our 90,000 members within Avant and on the national stage,” Ms Fenech said.

“Professor Robson’s deep experience and leadership as a medical practitioner and economist, as well as his passion for advocacy will ensure our members' needs continue to be understood and championed with government and other stakeholders,” she said.

Professor Robson is currently a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Australian National University Medical School and recently concluded his two-year tenure as the Federal President of the Australian Medical Association.

Professor Robson’s career includes obstetrics work, with special training and expertise in reproductive medicine, genetics, and pelvic surgery. He has authored hundreds of articles, papers, and textbooks – both in medicine and economics. He is also an experienced researcher with a PhD in health economics, and he is a strong advocate for improving Australia’s health system.

Professor Robson said he was passionate about supporting doctors to deliver safe and high-quality healthcare.

"Joining Avant offers a unique opportunity to collaborate with and represent the members of Australia’s largest doctor-owned organisation to drive meaningful improvements to healthcare,” Professor Robson said.

Professor Robson succeeds former Chief Medical Officer Dr Michael Wright, who served in the role from 2022 to 2024 and who was recently appointed President of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners.
